How the Test Works
The CatCheck Genetic Disease Test is a laboratory-based genetic test that screens for the presence of variants related to diseases and traits common among cats.
The test’s sample collection process is very simple, quick, and painless, and the assistance of a veterinarian or another specialist is unnecessary. The swab collection kit, which will be sent to you when you order the test, contains sample collection instructions.
The kit also contains instructions for sending the samples back to the laboratory. After sending these back, you can expect to receive the results via email in 4 to 6 weeks.
Because it looks at the cat’s genetic data, there is no minimum age required to undergo this test. However, it is important to consider the time between suckling/feeding and the collection of the sample.
When collecting the cat’s sample, remember to wait for a minimum of 45 minutes to 1 hour. Otherwise, contamination might happen, which can affect the test’s results.
Limitations of the CatCheck Genetic Disease Test
The CatCheck test can highlight potentially serious genetic disorders or conditions that require special attention. However, please note that this is not a diagnostic test.
It screens for more than 75 feline genetic variants, but it does not cover every known genetic variant of diseases in cats. Unusual test results should be discussed with your veterinarian, but normal results may not necessarily rule out other inherited variants not covered by the test.
If your cat is symptomatic, please consult your veterinarian.
The test also does not provide information about your cat’s breed.
